When to Treat It as an Emergency

What to Do While You Wait

  • Check the furnace switch. There is usually a switch that looks like a light switch on or near the unit. It gets flipped off by accident more often than you would think.
  • Check your filter. A completely clogged filter can cause a furnace to shut down on a safety limit. If it is filthy and you have a spare, change it.
  • Protect your pipes. If the house is getting cold, open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls and let a faucet drip.

My carbon monoxide detector went off. What do I do?

Get everyone out of the house first, then call from outside. Do not go back in to investigate. Carbon monoxide is odorless and this is not something to troubleshoot yourself.
